A used car can be a good buy or an expensive problem. A short check before you hand over money can save you a lot.
Before you see the car
- Ask for the registration number and check the car’s history: ownership, mileage records and whether it has been written off or has finance on it.
- Ask for the service history and the NCT certificate with the latest test results.
- Look at photos in daylight. Be careful if a seller will not let you view the car in person.

When you see the car
- Walk around it in daylight. Look for uneven panel gaps, paint that does not match and rust, especially around the wheel arches and sills.
- Check the tyres: matching brands, even wear and enough tread.
- Look under the car for fresh leaks.
- Open the bonnet when the engine is cold. A car that has been warmed up before you arrive may be hiding a starting problem.
- Check every window, light, indicator and warning light on the dashboard.
The test drive
Drive it on different roads. Listen for knocks or grinding. Check the car goes straight, brakes evenly and changes gear smoothly.
Cars imported from the UK
- Check that the import paperwork is complete and that the car has been registered in Ireland.
- Check the speedometer reads in kilometres (or is clearly set) and ask how the mileage was verified.
- Cars from the UK can have right-hand-drive headlight beams that need adjusting.
- Check the car’s age and condition carefully: imported cars are often older.
Get it checked by a mechanic
A mechanic can check the engine, brakes, suspension and underneath the car, and read the car’s computer for faults. We can do a pre-purchase inspection where the car is, before you buy. Tell us the make, model and where the car is.
Do not rush
If a seller pressures you to decide quickly or pay in cash on the spot, walk away.
