Brakes wear out slowly, so the signs are easy to put off. Some of them should not wait.
Six signs
- A high squeal when you brake. Many brake pads have a small metal tab that squeals when the pad is getting thin.
- A grinding sound. Metal on metal. The pads may be worn through, and the discs can be damaged.
- A soft or spongy pedal. It can mean air or a leak in the system, and the brakes may not work well.
- The car pulls to one side. One brake may be working harder than the other.
- A shaking steering wheel or pedal. Warped discs often cause this at speed.
- The brake warning light. Check the handbook and get advice.

What not to do
If the pedal goes to the floor, or the car does not slow down properly, do not keep driving. Pull over safely and ask for help.
What a check involves
A mechanic looks at the pads, the discs, the fluid and the pipes, and tells you what is worn. Some jobs can be done where you are. Others need a workshop, and we tell you which, before you agree to anything.
Before the NCT
Worn brakes are a common reason for a failed test. A quick look beforehand saves a second visit.
