Dashboard warning lights: what the colours mean and what to do

Amber engine warning light lit on a car dashboard

A warning light does not always mean a big bill, but it should never be ignored. The colour tells you how urgent it is.

Red: stop safely

A red light usually means something that can damage the car or make it unsafe to drive. Pull over when it is safe, switch off the engine and get advice. Common red lights:

  • Oil pressure: the engine may not be getting oil. Do not keep driving.
  • Engine temperature: the engine is overheating. Stop and let it cool before you open anything.
  • Brake system: it can mean low brake fluid or a fault in the system.
  • Battery or charging: the car may not be charging its battery and could stop.

Amber: get it checked soon

An amber light is a warning, not an emergency. Common ones:

  • Engine management: a fault is stored. If it flashes, reduce the load and get it checked quickly.
  • ABS or traction control: the car brakes normally, but those safety systems may be off.
  • Tyre pressure: one or more tyres are low. Check them.
  • Glow plug (diesel): a fault in the heating system for cold starts.

Green and blue

These are information lights: headlights on, indicators, cruise control. They are not a fault.

What to do

Check your handbook for the exact meaning of each light on your car. Write down which light came on and what the car was doing. Tell us when you call, and we will say whether it can be looked at where you are or needs a workshop.

Never drive far with a red light on.

If a light stays on, we can come and find out why: warning light diagnosis at your door.
